The works on this program are the quintessence of Romantic-era expression, with a focus on themes of individualism and emotionalism, and a lush, hyper-dramatic musical vocabulary. The performance begins with the Prelude from Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde and depicts the passions and frustration of the doomed lovers.
GRAMMY-award winning pianist Michelle Cann demonstrates her stunning technical prowess in a performance of Liszt’s 1st Piano Concerto, a piece the composer himself premiered to showcase not only his breathtaking ability as pianist, but his individualistic artistic expression.
The second half of the evening begins with Strauss’ profound tone poem, Death and Transfiguration, which explores the ultimate mystery of what lies beyond earthly existence.
Maestro Dinur has chosen Scriabin’s gloriously over-the-top, swooning piece of musical mysticism to close out our 45th Anniversary Season.
